Dimakiling, Pascua joint 2nd in Johor
MANILA, Philippines — International Masters Oliver Dimakiling and Haridas Pascua came through with different results in the ninth and final round to finish tied for second behind eventual champion Grandmaster M. R. Venkatesh of India in the fourth Johor International Open in Johor, Malaysia Saturday.
Dimakiling downed third seed IM Yeoh Li Tian of Malaysia while Pascua held reigning Penang Open champion and top seed GM Karen Grigoryan of Armenia to a draw. They ended up tied at No. 2 with Uzbek GM Tair Vahidov, who downed Indian Sammed Jaykumar Shete, with seven points apiece.
Dimakiling wound up with the highest tiebreak score of 48.5 as against Vahidov’s 46.5/36.50 and Pascua’s 46.5/35.75 to clinch second.
Venkatesh turned back countryman IM K. Rathnakaran to seal the crown with 7.5 points.
IM Hamed Nouri and John Marvin Miciano missed joining Dimakiling and Pascua in that group. Nouri lost to second seed GM Nguyen Doc Hoa of Vietnam while Rathnakaran bowed to GM Gerhard Schebler of Germany. They finished with five points apiece.
Dimakiling ended up with a solid performance rating of 2567 and should have his current rating of 2425 improved after gaining 17.4 rating points from his strong effort.
Pascua, rated 2424 but would need to reach 2500 to officially clinch the GM title, managed just 3.3 rating points.
