Looking at the campaigns of Creamline, Flying V

Creamline's Alyssa Valdez and FilOil's Jeron Teng

MANILA, Philippines — It hasn’t been a good year for teams that swept their elimination round campaigns.

This month of August alone, two teams, first the Creamline Cool Smashers, and second the Flying V Thunder, fell one after the other in their respective semifinal series matchups.

Creamline went 7-0 in the Open Conference of the Premier Volleyball League. The won the first match of their semis series against BaliPure but were stopped dead in their tracks in the next two games.

Flying V went 10-0 to sweep the elimination round of the PBA D-league Foundation Cup. Like Creamline, they won the first match of their final four series against Centro Escolar University. Unfortunately, they were ran ragged in the next two outings and bounced from the tournament.

Both teams are in their maiden year of competition. Both have been widely successful beyond their dreams. Unfortunately, the bubble burst and their respective seasons ended with a thud.

The similarities between both teams do not end there.

Each paraded one of the most devastating weapons in their sport.
Creamline had Alyssa Valdez while Flying V featured Jeron Teng. Both can put up points like no one’s business. They are the first options for their respective sides and the last option. That’s how good they are.

Valdez had with her former Ateneo teammate and super setter Jia Morado while Teng also played alongside his college teammate and point guard Thomas Torres.

Creamline had an Ateneo flavor to them but also featured former La Salle star, Ivy Remulla.

Flying V had La Salle green all over it but also prominently paraded former Blue Eagle star, Eric Salamat.

Both teams also had sprinklings of stars from other teams.

Both teams had coaches who won collegiate titles.

The Cool Smashers had two-time UAAP volleyball champion coach Anusorn Bundit while the Thunder had Eric Altamirano who has a UAAP Men’s Basketball Championship to go with his PBA titles.

It would be easy to postulate that both teams overachieved especially in their maiden campaign. Maybe so. But to come so tantalizingly close… it has to hurt too.

The bright side, management for both squads are backing up their teams. Their respective owners – Joseph Ng for Creamline and Chito Villavicencio are highly supportive and are at all the matches as much as possible. They spare no expense for their teams and their players like them.

This setback no doubt sticks. And what does that mean?

There’s unfinished business. So watch out.
