Frayna ends streak, loses to Ukrainian WGM
MANILA, Philippines – Janelle Mae Frayna saw her unbeaten streak snapped after losing to fourth seed and fellow Woman Grandmaster Evgeniya Doluhanova of Ukraine to slip out of the top 10 after six rounds of the Women's International Open in Erfurt, Germany Wednesday night.
Entering the sixth round, Frayna, 21, was in a small group at sixth place with 3.5 points highlighted by a win over WGM Galina Strutinskaia of Russia and three draws against WGMs Joanna Majdan of Poland and Ilze Berzina of Latvia and Woman International Master Nino Khomeriki of Georgia.
Her other win came at the expense of untitled Victoria Wagner of Germany in the opening round.
The former Far Eastern University standout and cum laude was hoping to bounce back from the loss as she was facing with Linda Kruminda of Latvia in the seventh round at press time.
The Erfurt tilt is Frayna’s third tournament since she embarked on an ambitious European campaign with the goal of barging into the top 10 in the world's women's rankings and becoming the first female GM in the Philippines.
