TAIPEI – The Gilas Pilipinas gunners were early in the gym for a shoot-around session the morning after a nightmarish 1-of-26 three-point shooting in a 72-83 loss to South Korea on Wednesday.

“In a game like that when you struggle with your shooting, the best thing to do is to get back in the gym and shoot some more,” said Gilas assistant coach Jimmy Alapag, among the finest marksmen Phl basketball has ever seen.

Alapag is confident this Gilas team’s campaign here will not be defined by that harrowing shooting versus the Koreans. The man called the “Might Mouse” is hopeful the Nationals will redeem themselves in their remaining games in the Jones Cup.

“It happens. When you play basketball, sometimes when you feel it’s gonna go in, it doesn’t drop. But I think it was a great learning experience for this team,” said Alapag. “This is the early stage of the building process. You’re gonna go through growing pains. And we’ll get better.”

Alapag said Gilas did well against the Koreans “on a defensive standpoint.”

He mentioned the breaks that went the Koreans’ way, gifting them at least five bonus points.

“You take away those, and we practically held the Koreans to 70 points. That shows how well we played well defensively. But of course you’ll not beat Korea if you miss 25 three-point shots,” he said.

Alapag is optimistic these young cadets will get better.
