Chiefs, two others gain in Martin Cup

MANILA, Philippines – Arellano University, Centro Escolar University-A and Colegio San Benildo disposed of their respective rivals in the 14th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament at the Arellano University gym in Legarda last weekend.

Clifford Cahigas came away with 19 points while three others also churned out double-digit scores for the Arellano University Chiefs, who downed the CEU-B Scorpions, 65-56.

The Chiefs actually trailed the Scorpions in the third period, 41-46, but the hosts rallied and outscored their rivals in the fourth with Ivan Pineda adding 11 points.

Orlan Wamar fired 15 points and Gills Oloume chipped in 12 markers  as the CEU-A Scorpions subdued the Far Eastern U side, 66-54, in the other game.

Gelo Bernas, meanwhile, shot 19 points as the San Benildo Blazing Wolves smothered the Far Eastern U Baby Tamaraws, 66-54, in junior action of the tournament which drew 31 schools from the seniors and juniors sides.

Fourteen teams are vying in the college division, according to chief organizer Edmundo “Ato” Badolato and commissioner Robert de la Rosa.

Listed in Group A of the premier category are Adamson University, Arellano, San Sebastian College, Jose Rizal University, CEU-B, St. Michael and Diliman Preparatory School while FEU heads Group B that includes San Beda, Letran, University of Perpetual Help-Cavite, CEU-A and Colegio San Agustin-Biñan and Mary the Queen College-Pampanga.
