Jumbo Plastic halts Mighty Sports, keeps PCBL crown

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Jumbo Plastic became back-to-back champions of the PCBL by beating Mighty Sports, 80-68, at the packed Marikina Sports Center.

Riding on the momentum of their big overtime win over Mighty Sports in Game 2, the Linoleum Giants were able to put together another inspired performance anchored on Jeff Viernes, who delivered on Friday’s most important game of this tournament supported by LGR, During’s Barbeque and Restaurant, Spalding, Ambucore, Hahn Manila and Leatherman.

After erupting for 31 points in Game 2, Viernes presided on his team’s offense anew. His seven straight points in the fourth period gave his team a 70-63 lead entering the final two minutes of the game and provided the Linoleum Giants the cushion they needed in claiming the Chairman’s Cup, the second straight title won by the franchise.

Viernes finished with 21 points to become the hands down choice as the Finals MVP.

Jumbo Plastic coach Stevenson Tiu said Kiefer Ravena’s absence gave his team a big break but following the team’s win in Game 2 where they survived the tournament MVP’s explosion, the Linoleum Giants were more fired up to win.

“We got a big break when Ravena didn’t play, but I think even if he played, the players will have the same mindset as they became more confident after we won Game 2,” said Tiu.
