Aetas learn driftwood sculpting

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A number of Aetas were recent beneficiaries of a training activity on driftwood sculpting under a livelihood program of mobile leader Smart Communications (Smart).

The Aetas of Angeles, Pampanga are the latest beneficiaries of the program, training under the Daambakal Sculptors of Tondo, Manila and the Banglos Sculptors headed by master sculptor Rey Paz Contreras.

Smart started organizing sculpture trainings in 2005, when it saw an opportunity for displaced fisherfolk of Banglos, Quezon to literally sculpt a new livelihood out of the driftwood and felled logs that littered the area following four consecutive typhoons in 2004.

Apart from providing an alternative source of livelihood, the training helps to unleash creativity and encourage respect for the environment among the communities.

So far, 150 people in eight communities have undergone sculpture training under the program. To help link the communities to potential markets, Smart also organizes selling exhibits in different areas such as Makati City and Alabang in Muntinlupa City.
