Tinder: A virtual bar crowd for men and women

Alixandra Caole Vila - The Philippine Star

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - Tinder, the hookup app, has cracked the code into winning the dating arms race. Using this app is like being in a faux bar crowd with all the eye candy without the ear-numbing, heart-pounding dubstep music, and minus the smell of alcohol sweat, and putrid barf-filled toilets.

For those who have not heard about this app, Tinder is a location-based dating service that allows you to connect with people in proximity to your phone's GPS.

Tinder makes it easy for you to meet people. All you need is an Internet connection, an opposable thumb, and probably your best pictures. This is how to create a tinder account:

  1. Download the app. Download it from the Apple App store, Google Play Store, or directly from the Tinder website.
  2. Log in using your Facebook account. Tinder requires a Facebook profile in order to create an account. Tinder links you up with friends of your friends or nearby people based on your location. Since Tinder uses your Facebook data, it is a good idea to update your basic public information and profile photos.
  3. Edit your Tinder profile. Tap the Edit text on the upper-right corner of the app. The next screen allows you to edit your photos and your brief description or tagline.
  4. Edit the settings menu. Tap the upper-left corner to access the app menu. Menu options include profile, home, messages, settings, and invite. Tap on settings menu. This menu will allow you to set your preferred gender, your proximity for matches, and more. You must have GPS enabled on your device in order to use Tinder. You may also toggle notification settings. Now you are ready to find your match.

When checking out your potential match: swipe to the right (“Like”), if you are interested on the person; swipe left if you are not.  If two users both swiped “Like" on each other's photos, the app matches you and allows you to start a chat.  Worst case scenario is when someone you like dumps you in the "Nope" pile.

To make this app even more exciting, Tinder’s new “moments” feature has been introduced lately.

From its blog:

"Moments are swipe-able photos you can instantly share with all of your matches at once. With Moments you can swipe through fun Moments shared by your matches and get a glimpse into each others lives. You can react by swiping right to “like” or left to “nope” a Moment, just as you would profiles, or you can take it one step further and reply with a message. Moments are the perfect excuse to say more than just “hello.” Just like real life the moments we experience start to fade, which is why every shared Tinder Moment can only be seen for 24 hours."

Here is what you have to remember. The first rule about online dating is that there are no rules about online dating. The painful truth is that Tinder is a jungle full of men and women looking for a hookup; these are not the ones who are looking for their soulmates. Remember,  you have to kiss a lot of frogs before meeting your prince charming; in “Tinder words,” you have to meet a lot of creeps, before finding the right match.
