Secret diet to slow down aging, revealed by expert

MANILA, Philippines - A recent study conducted by the University of the Philippines Population Institute revealed that in between 2025 to 2030, the country’s population would start to age.

The study plays a vital role in taking up steps that can help reduce the impacts of aging. For starters, you should always keep in mind that whatever your age is right now, it is never too early or late to assume a lifestyle that will improve your chances of remaining healthy and smart as you approach your old years.

With years of experience as a professor of psychiatry at the UCLA Semel Institute, US, where he conducted studies using modern brain scan technology and neuropsychological evaluations, as well as assessments of cardiovascular status, exercise levels, and dietary habits that may strength memory, Dr. Gary Small concludes that “while aging is inevitable, its negative consequences on health can be slowed down with the help of good nutrition and both physical and mental exercise.”

While physical exercise is significant in healthy aging, Small says what you eat daily also determines your state of health.

To slow down the aging of the brain, Small recommends advocating a meal plan called or close to the Mediterranean Diet.

According to Small, this type of diet is not just good for the brain, but is also healthy overall since it helps to protect the heart and control body weight.

Such diet includes the following:

  1. antioxidant fruits - berries and raisins
  2. antioxidant vegetables - spinach and broccoli
  3. foods rich in omega-3 fats - fish and walnuts
  4. healthy proteins - chicken breast, fish, and low-fat yogurt
  5. whole grains - brown rice and oatmeal.

Furthermore, you should also incorporate a lot of spices and herbs in your diet such as garlic, which has proven to lower cholesterol levels and blood pressure and ginger which may soothe arthritis.

“A good diet will not only boost your mental and physical health as you age, but will also help you look and feel good. And it doesn’t mean avoiding foods and snacks you might enjoy. I have a sweet tooth, which occasionally gets the best of me. When that happens, I remind myself that moderation is the key — and chocolate does contain brain healthy antioxidants,” notes Small.

For supplements, you may also try Herbalifeline, a specially formulated blend of highly refined marine lipids with high quality Omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which help to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. - Alixandra Caole Vila
