Minnie me

CULTURE VULTURE - Therese Jamora-Garceau - The Philippine Star

You don’t have to be a little girl to be a Minnie Mouse fan — at least, that’s what I told myself when I got excited over the new Minnie Mouse nail lacquer collection, a collaboration between Walt Disney Philippines and Girlstuff, the nail-polish brand of Dr. Janina Gutierrez-Tan, president and CEO of JRadiance Corp.

It’s the first time Disney has officially co-branded with Girlstuff, which has been a licensee for five years, manufacturing hand sanitizers, soaps, and makeup for movies like Frozen and characters like Tsum Tsum. But now, thanks to Tan’s long track record of providing high-quality products, Disney has entrusted her with interpreting one of its most beloved characters through nail polish.

At the “Minnie Rocks the Dots” launch, professional manicurists treated guests to nail art featuring the 10 shades in the Disney Minnie Mouse collection. (For you to try it at home, Disney and Girlstuff’s social media sites have also released online nail-art tutorials by TV host/model Janeena Chan, actress Alexa Ilacad and beauty blogger Nikki Tiu.)

Tan divided the 10 shades into three groups: “One group depicts the romance between Mickey and Minnie, so it’s vintage: Yours Truly (a warm nude), Je t’aime (dark taupe), and True Love Story (vintage mauve) — more classic, adult colors,” Tan says.

Another group depicts the personality of Minnie Mouse, “so we lifted the pantone colors from her dress, from the style guide, and transformed it into nail polish.” Hence, there’s Be Mine (the cherry red of Minnie’s dress), Live Out Loud (cotton-candy pink), All Dolled Up (strawberry-smoothie pink), and So In Love (deep red), which was most people’s insta-fave at the launch.

The last group takes inspiration from Minnie’s adventures, so you have Paint the Town (an aqua from pastel blue mixed with mint green), Simply Me (white mashed up with the lightest of grays), and Sweetest Little Thing (ballerina pink from a blend of white and blush).

And, as with all Girlstuff polishes, the Minnie Mouse collection is made in France, free of formaldehyde, toluene and other harmful chemicals, and a beauty steal/perfect stocking stuffer/Christmas exchange gift for only P150 per polish, or P430 for a gift set of three.

“After much sweat, tears, hard work, and a lot of safety documents, we have finally done it,” Tan proudly declared.

I have an announcement to make as well: my five-year-old niece used to be the most vocal Minnie Mouse fan in our family, but now I have officially joined her. Minnie me… please.
