Did you know that quinoa is a good exfoliating agent?

MANILA, Philippines — As we age, desquamation begins to slow and the stratrum corneum (SC) becomes more uneven in texture. Hydration in the skin also begins to diminish; leading to skin that reflects light in a scattered fashion on and under the surface. The result is dull looking skin, more visible fine lines, uneven skin tone and coarser texture.

The dermatology industry addresses these through esthetic procedures such as chemical peels.

However, though chemical peel is an effective treatment, it is not always favorable to the client who needs it.

“Despite the popularity of chemical peels, they present a number of barriers,” shares Dr. Adam Geyer, Kiehl’s consulting dermatologist.

“While effective, the treatment can cause skin sensitivity including redness, irritation, PIH or POH and scarring. The expense of such treatments also presents a challenge for many patients, as a single chemical peel treatment can cost between $600 to $900. In addition, consumers must undergo preparation and precautions to ensure efficacy of an in-office peel and to minimize post-peel sensitivities.”

Good thing there are innovative solution for customers seeking gentle and affordable at-home alternatives to chemical peels, as well as medical patients desiring heightened efficacy of a dermatologist procedure.

Kiehl’s chemists created Nightly Refining Micro-Peel Concentrate, a product that can serve as an efficient alternative to the clinical chemical peel. The secret ingredient? Quinoa.

Quinoa as an effective exfoliator

Until recently, quinoa was largely unknown outside of South America, where is has been a staple for Bolivian families for over 3000 years. With its recent popularity in the diets of communities around the world, quinoa is now considered a “superfood”, one of the healthiest grain crops, known for its high protein, essential amino acid and vitamin content.

The discovery of quinoa husk as a natural desquamation ingredient expands the “essential” nature of this powerful plant to offer anti-aging skincare benefits – a true beauty industry breakthrough.

“As the quinoa seeds were being rinsed, it was noticed that the plant’s discarded outer husks had begun to bubble” shared Roberta Weiss, Kiehl’s head of product innovation since 1851. “This activity led to the finding that quinoa husks have exemplary skin exfoliation benefits. What was once considered waste, was now a unique scientific discovery.”

This multi-benefit innovation offers a highly effective yet overnight anti-aging treatment for at-home use and enhanced results, improved tolerability and faster recovery when used with in-office peels. - Alixandra Caole Vila
