Toyota’s Wigo breaches sales target

Louella Desiderio - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. (TMPC) has breached its sales target for the Wigo in its first full-month of availability, signaling positive market reception for the firm’s new mini hatchback.

TMPC said yesterday it sold a total of 627 units of the Wigo in March, higher than its 500 monthly sales target.

The sales performance show the new vehicle model has made a mark in the local automotive industry, as it accounted for a 27.9 percent share in the entry-level hatchback segment, outpacing its competitors.

“We are deeply grateful for the very quick and positive response from the market towards our newly launched Wigo. This overwhelming sales performance is a testament to the trust the customers have towards Toyota’s newly launched product,” TMPC president Michinobu Sugata said.

He noted that the Wigo is appealing to the Filipino market as it is the most affordable model in TMPC’s lineup.

“We are certain that this mini hatchback will continue to be well-received by people who want a car that is easy-to-own and easy-to-drive, therefore making it definitely easy to enjoy,” he said further.

TMPC is banking on its newly launched vehicles to achieve new record-high sales this year.

Aside from the Wigo, other vehicle models introduced by the firm this year are the Corolla Altis, Innova and Yaris.

TMPC aims to sell about 90,000 units this year.

Last year, TMPC achieved record-high sales of 75,587 units.

Earlier, Sugata said the firm may raise its sales goal for the year citing results in the first few months of the year have been encouraging.

As of the first quarter, the company’s sales rose 34 percent to 22,828 units compared to the 17,061 units sold in the first quarter last year.
