MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon Gorio (international name: Podul) has slightly intensified as it moves closer to the eastern coast of southern Taiwan, the state weather bureau PAGASA said.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin on Wednesday, August 13, PAGASA said the eye of the typhoon was located about 165 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes. It was moving west-northwest at 25 kph with maximum sustained winds of 140 kph near the center and gusts of up to 170 kph.

PAGASA raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2 over Itbayat, Batanes, where gale-force winds of 62 to 88 kph are expected in the next 24 hours, posing a minor to moderate threat to life and property.

The rest of Batanes remains under TCWS No. 1, warning of strong winds of 39 to 61 kph.

Gorio is also enhancing the southwest monsoon (habagat), bringing strong to gale-force gusts to the Babuyan Islands, northern mainland Cagayan, eastern Isabela and northern Ilocos Norte.

Gale warning. PAGASA issued a warning for the seaboards of extreme northern Luzon, with very rough seas of up to 9 meters expected in Batanes, making sea travel risky for all types of vessels.

Track forecast. The typhoon is expected to make landfall over the eastern coast of southern Taiwan today before exiting the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) this afternoon or evening. It is forecast to remain a typhoon until landfall, after which it may weaken.

Rains. Several parts of the country are expected to see rains and thunderstorms today due to Typhoon Gorio and the southwest monsoon.

  • Batanes – rains with gusty winds; minimal to minor threat to life and property.
  • Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Cagayan – cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms.
  • MIMAROPA, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, BARMM, SOCCSKSARGEN, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate – cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms from the habagat.

Residents in affected areas are warned of possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to heavy rains.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country may experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms from localized thunderstorms.
