CEBU, Philippines — A new building for Mandaue City College will be built soon in Barangay Looc to accommodate the growing number of students.

Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes said the project shows his administration’s commitment to providing free college education to the city residents. Cortes said the city government is allocating P40 million budget for the college every year for the salaries of teachers and other staff. Currently, the City College has a student population of more than 2,000.

“Atong paninguhaon nga mahuman gyud ni og dali. Pero sa pagkakaron, we will demolish pa these old structure unya abunuhan pa na nga inug baha dili gyud siya mabahaan una pa itukod ang bag-o nga building,” the mayor said, referring to the old structures previously occupied by the Land Transportation Office and the Mandaue City Jail.

The current MCC is located within vicinity of Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

In the meantime, Cortes said some offices within the complex will be relocated to accommodate more classrooms. MCC officials recently presented to Cortes a certificate of program compliance from the Commission on Higher Education.

According to CHED, MCC has complied with the prescribed minimum requirements to offer the following programs---Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English, Bachelor of Elementary Education, Bachelor of Science Information Technology, Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Mathematics, and Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Filipino--effective this Academic Year 2024-2025.

“This Certificate of Program Compliance (COPC), however, is subject to revocation if herein institution fails to maintain the prescribed standards for the program. Furthermore, this COPC does not extend to any branch or satellite campus of the institution,” reads part of the COPC signed by CHED-7 regional director Maura Consolacion Cristobal on May 6, 2024.

Mandaue City Councilor Malcolm Sanchez, chairman on the committee on education, said that they are elated on this latest development.

“What we are doing is not for ourselves but for the MCC students and the future generation,” said Sanchez. — (FREEMAN)
