Another barangay councilman shot dead in Negros Occidental

Gilbert P. Bayoran - The Freeman

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Another newly-elected barangay councilman was gunned down by a still unidentified assailant Tuesday night at rebel-infested Barangay Gatuslao of Candoni town in Negros Occidental.

Senior Inspector Jaynick Bermudez, Candoni Police chief, identified the victim as Gatuslao Councilman Willie Castor, 58, who succumbed to three gunshot wounds.

Castor died in the hospital, based on the text message of his family members, said the police official.

Investigations of the Candoni Police showed the victim went out of his house to check why the dogs were barking at the time, when a man came up and shot the councilman. Candoni policemen are still investigating the incident.

The killing of Castor came three days after 51-year-old Councilwoman Salvacion Samson, of Barangay General Malvar in Pontevedra, Negros Occidental, was also shot dead at her residence on May 26. Investigation is still going on into the killing of Samson.
