Mandaue OKS carwash measure

CEBU, Philippines – A measure requiring carwash shops along Mandaue City streets to move away from sidewalks has been approved by the City Council.

This new law mandates all carwash businesses to refrain from using the walkways and sidewalks for parking cars and for holding their equipment so as not to block pedestrians.

Councilor Jimmy Lumapas, chairman of the Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure and author of the ordinance, said carwash firms encroaching the sidewalks have become an "eye sore" to the people of Mandaue and even to visitors.

"It is worth noting that there are yet some of these carwash facilities which are extending their working areas in the adjacent sidewalks and foot walks," read the newly approved "Carwash Ordinance" of Mandaue.

Lumapas said by blocking a portion of the streets, these shops have exposed pedestrians and motorists to hazards.

"As we utilize business opportunities, let it not be the very reason to cause life hazards to the general public. The city government is determined to embark on measures that promote common good and prevent those which are incognizant to public safety," part of the ordinance read.

Once fully implemented, violators of the ordinance will be penalized with closure as heaviest penalty.

For the first offense, a reprimand and warning will be issued to violators. Second time offenders will be fined P3,000 while permanent cancellation of the business permit and a fine of P5,000 will be slapped to the third time offenders. (FREEMAN)
