CCSC to undergo total rehab

Iris Hazel Mascardo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The newly rehabilitated Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) is set to undergo another total rehabilitation that would cost the government a whopping P64 million, according to the presentation made by the Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) during an executive session of the City Council yesterday.

This initiative stemmed from the resolution of Councilor Jerry Guardo, chairman of the committee on infrastructure.

Architect Jonard Tonde, a representative of DEPW, said this undertaking will be considered a total rehabilitation. The scope of work includes repainting the offices, replacing damaged ceilings and tiles, and fully rehabilitating the remaining comfort rooms.

For the second floor, Tonde said they will also fully rehabilitate the classrooms, which were damaged, particularly the electrical wiring and ceilings. He added that the badminton area will undergo minor repainting and repairs of the electrical wiring.

In addition, the grandstand near the swimming pool will also undergo total rehabilitation, including repainting, replacement of electrical fixtures, and other improvements. Other aspects of the rehabilitation will comply with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) mandates, which include the installation of sprinklers, fire protection systems, and mechanical works.

Furthermore, it was recommended that the electrical system for the entire CCSC be completely replaced.

The total rehabilitation has a budget requirement of P64,891,000. This was indicated in Guardo's resolution, which is meant to authorize the mayor to sign the contract. However, the signing was deferred due to questions raised by the council, particularly regarding the amount.

Tonde, however, said that their original Programs of Work and Estimates (POWE) required a total budget of P70 million.

Guardo further explained that the bulk of the rehabilitation involves the total replacement of the electrical system for the Sports Center.

Tonde emphasized that replacing the electrical system is crucial, especially since some panels are already exposed.

“I-replace gyud nato nya tarungon nato tanan nga masud sa usa ka electrical room, then malimpyo nato,” said Tonde, echoing the recommendation of their professional electrical unit.

Tonde also mentioned that this proposal aligns with the plans made during the Palarong Pambansa to add more outdoor field lights for the soccer area. He added that this rehabilitation aims to ensure that during events, the CCSC will no longer need a generator set.

Additionally, the rehabilitation will include the installation of CCTV cameras on the ground and second floors for security purposes.

To recall, the CCSC was temporarily closed on May 18, 2023, to undergo renovation. After over a year of closure, the CCSC reopened on June 27, 2024, just in time for the hosting of the Palarong Pambansa. –/FPL (FREEMAN)
