Mandaue prepares for rainy season with clean-up drives
CEBU, Philippines — In preparation for the rainy season, the Mandaue City government has started clean-up drives to help prevent flooding, particularly in areas known to be flood-prone.
Led by Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes and City Councilor Jen del Mar, the clean-up drive kicked-off in Brgy. Ibabao-Estancia with some residents participating.
The “bayanihan” system began on the streets and other areas that are prone to the accumulation of garbage resulting in flooding.
Cortes has emphasized that cleaning one’s backyard and in every community or sitio is essential so that when rainy day comes, there are no more barriers in the city’s drainage.
The mayor is hopeful that every Mandauehanon will be mindful of their surroundings by not indiscriminately throwing garbage, especially in canals, drainage, and waterways, as these can cause flooding in their respective communities.
Cortes, likewise, directed the City Engineering Office (CEO) to clean-up manholes, drainage, and canals, which the office has already started in Brgy. Looc with the use of the vacuum truck owned by the city government.
Residents in the said barangay were thankful of this move as based on their experience in the past, Sitio Dela Paz in their barangay experienced heavy flooding.
According to Engr. Louie Rey Biton, Operation Head of the Maintenance Division of CEO, it is their priority to put the three vacuum trucks of the city government in flood prone areas which includes barangay Looc. (CEBU NEWS)
