CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu City Agriculture Office reported that at least P5 million worth of crops and livestock in 12 barangays were damaged by the heavy rainfall during the past days.

Assistant city agriculturist Arlie Gesta said the affected barangays include Sudlon I, Sudlon II, Sinsin, Sirao, Paril, Malubog, Mabini, Lusaran, Guba, Cambinocot, Buot, and Binaliw.

Gesta said that among the crops affected by the rains are tomatoes, eggplant, ginger, lettuce, Chinese cabbage, among others.

Gesta said that the flower farms in Sirao are also affected with the damage estimated at P2.3 million. Sirao was badly affected by the landslides. In fact, the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office closed the famous flower farm in the barangay from visitors due to tension cracks.

Gesta said the consumers can expect an increase in the prices of vegetables in the market in the coming days. He said the city government has already helped the affected farmers.

“Para maka-recover nanghatag ta og abono then plastic moist para dili na ma-damage ang uban crops,” he told The FREEMAN.

The areas were livestock was affected are Tagba-o, Tabonan, Babag and Lusaran. Gesta said at least six goats and three cows died due to heavy rains and cold spell.

“Atong advise nila is to construct a stable shelter sa mga animals dili magsalig sa kahoy lang, dapat naa gyu’y ilahang puy-anan kay kining kanding sensitibo man gud kaayo ni sila,” Gesta said. (FREEMAN)
