Eala dispatches Owensby
MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala stamped her class over home bet Charlotte Owensby, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the Round of 16 of the US Open juniors championships yesterday.
Eala, who earned a first-round bye as the No. 2 seed, was quick to find her strokes to eliminate her American foe and arrange a third-round faceoff with Greece’s Michaela Laki.
The Filipina sensation was to play Laki late last night (11 p.m. Manila time) for a seat in the quarterfinals.
And Eala and Laki will meet anew hours later in the second round of the girls’ doubles play.
The 16-year-old ace is teaming up with Belgium’s Hanne Vandewinkel against Laki, who will play with Slovakia’s Radka Zelnickova after their 6-0, 7-5 first-round win over the American pair of Tatum Evans and Amelia Honer.
