Pacquiao still in pain

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

LOS ANGELES – There was only one thing that emanated from within the tight Team Pacquiao circle on this cold day in the City of Angels.

And it’s not the kind of news you’d want to hear two days after Manny Pacquiao took a sound beating from Yordenis Ugas in Las Vegas.

“Still in pain,” were the words leaked to the press.

Against Ugas, the bigger and heavier fighter inside the ring, Pacquiao absorbed the kind of punishment he had never had for quite some time.

Heavy body shots and solid blows to the head took its toll on Pacquiao, not to mention that it was a 42-year-old body taking them.

Before some 17,000 fans screaming his name at the T-Mobile Arena, Pacquiao also faced the deadliest foe any boxer could ever face – Father Time.

Now, experts are suggesting it’s time to call it a day.

Pacquiao stayed in the comforts of his home Monday after the lonely and quiet five-hour drive from Las Vegas the other day.

No news on whether he had eyes, either cut, swollen or shut, checked; no definite word on when he’s flying home.

“Ma’am Jinkee (Pacquiao) said he’s just resting in his room,” added the source who is better left unidentified.

No visitors allowed.

Former Bacolod congressman Monico Puentevella, the senator’s spokesperson, took liberty telling Pinoy scribes a little bit more.

“He’s now in isolation to join his family here in LA. We haven’t talked because we want him to totally heal his minor wounds and rest,” he said.

“A few days ago he told me he’ll go back (home to Manila) on the 27th but that can change. Maybe we’ll talk tomorrow,” Puentevella added.

NOTES: Buboy Fernandez, who on paper is Manny Pacquiao’s head trainer, reiterated Monday his call for a rematch with Cuban Yordenis Ugas. “Nasabi tayong legendary, di ba? Papayag ka na ganun-ganun lang, ang kaibigan mo tinalo ng halos di kilalang tao? Tapos dun lang matatapos yung career natin?” he told Pinoy scribes. Fernandez tried to recall the moments during the fight when Pacquiao started to complain about cramps, from one leg to both. He also remembered Pacquiao asking him, “Lamang ba tayo?” He replied by saying Ugas is gaining the upperhand and that Pacquiao needed to sweep the last three rounds to pull it off. Inside the dressing room, Fernandez was seen embracing Pacquiao, and the boxer asked him, “Bakit ka umiiyak?” It’s self-explanatory.
