Missing-in-action Almazan dealing with 'problem,' says agent

MANILA, Philippines —  Three days into the Raymond Almazan’s disappearance from  Rain or Shine and the lanky but athletic big man remains off the grid.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday night, Danny Espiritu, the godfather-cum-agent to many PBA players including Almazan himself, said even he has no idea where the big man is.

But he noted that they are having an active line of correspondence.

“Sabi niya sa akin, antayin ko lang daw, inaayos pa raw niya yung problema niya, matatapos din daw ito,” Espiritu said.

“Nakausap ko naman ‘yung misis niya, sabi nung misis niya, wala naman daw [silang] problema,” he continued.

Almazan was first reported as AWOL during Rain or Shine's game against the Alaska Aces on October 3. The Elasto Painters, through head coach Caloy Garcia, only acknowledged the situation and declared him MIA after the team’s loss to Blackwater four days later.

Yeng Guiao, a former mentor to Almazan, and whose NLEX squad was playing Phoenix also on Wednesday night, chimed in on the situation.

"Asawa niya nga hindi alam eh, alangan naman ako maka-alam noon," he shared. “I actually talked to coach Caloy [Garcia], kinamusta ko lang. Sabi naman ni coach Caloy, subukan nilang ayusin, subukan nilang kausapin but sila rin, wala pang contact.”

In February, Spin.PH reported that Almazan, Beau Belga and Jericho Cruz reportedly wanted out of the Elasto Painters, citing their discontent over Garcia’s style with the team.

Cruz was eventually shipped to TNT. The other two remained in Rain or Shine.

Almazan has a year left remaining on his contract before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. Spin also indicated that six teams are interested acquiring him.

Almazan served Garcia during their time with the Letran Knights during the former’s MVP season in the NCAA. They also saw action together under Guiao for the national team in the Asian Games and the second round of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers just last month.

“Two days ago nung nag text siya sakin, wala pa akong update sa kanya (since then),” Espiritu closed.
