Janelle Mae Frayna, John Marvin Miciano draw after 102 moves
MANILA, Philippines — International Master John Marvin Miciano and Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna fought to a marathon 102-move draw of a King’s Indian Attack to finish 11th and 12th, respectively, in the 44th Open Internacional d’Escacs Vila De Sitges in Spain Saturday night.
Miciano and Frayna went for a victory but just couldn’t startle the other. Both were left with a knight and three pawns in one of the longest games in the tournament and wound up tied for eight with five others with six points.
After the tiebreak, however, Miciano placed 11th while Frayna 12th.
Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales, on the other hand, dropped his final round match to eighth seed IM Inigo Argandona Riveiro in 56 moves of a Modern Defense and wound up 21st with 5.5 points.
Meanwhile, the three Filipinos gear up for their fourth straight tournament in the 22nd Hogeschool Zeeland tournament set Aug. 4-11 in Vlissingen, the Netherlands and the Bruges Masters 2018 slated Aug. 12-16 in Bruges, Belgium.
