Power Pinoys yield to Taiwanese, but remain hopeful for quarters berth

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – PLDT Home TVolution Philippines fell to Chinese Taipei, 25-15, 25-12, 25-11, Saturday but still remained in the hunt for a quarterfinals slot in the 2014 Asian Women's Club Volleyball Championship in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand.

A couple of days after downing KSEB India, 25-17, 26-24, 25-16, the Power Pinays absorbed two consecutive defeats, the first at the hands of Tianjin Bohai Bank China, 25-15, 25-16, 25-17, on Good Friday and then to Taipei City.

The Filipina spikers, however, are still in contention for one of the berths in the quarters if they could hurdle at least one of their remaining assignments – Zhetyssu Almaty Kazakhstan at 1 p.m. Sunday (Phl time) and Singapore on Monday.

To date, the Filipinas were at fourth in Group B behind unbeaten Tianjin Bohai Bank China and Taipei City with 3-0 (win-loss) records and Zhetyssue Almaty (1-1).

KSEB (0-2) and Singapore (0-3) occupy the bottom of the bracket.

Meanwhile, Hisamitsu Springs Japan, Nakhon Ratchasima Thailand, Matin Varamin Iran and Lien Viet Post Bank Vietnam have all qualified in the quarters regardless of the result after Turkmenistan pulled out in the last minute.

The Power Pinoys are hoping to match, if not surpass, their male counterparts' strong seventh place finish in the 2014 Asian Men's Club Volleyball Championship presented by PLDT Home Fibr at the MOA Arena in Pasay City a couple of days back.
