Sinag blasts Malaysia, moves win shy of gold

JAKARTA – Sinag Pilipinas is a game away from claiming the gold medal most precious for the nation back home.

Tested by the Malaysians in the first half, the Nationals stepped up in the last two quarters to score a 103-74 win and set their anticipated gold-medal showdown with the home team.

Phl coach Norman Black was thankful they drew some challenge from the Malaysians, believing this would help them prepare for the Indons.

“It’s a good preparation for Sunday (tomorrow),” said Black.

With a close 44-41 lead at the turn, the Nationals needed to intensify their press in the final half to win by a big margin.

The game’s end was marred by some commotion with Malaysia player Ong Chun Khee, fielded in only in the closing minute, hitting Eman Monfort at the back of his head.

The proverbial cooler heads prevented the incident from getting out of hand.

Malaysian coach Cheng Huat Goh later said they were disappointed, believing they could keep the game close to the finish.

“Our players broke down in the final half,” said Cheng, himself unable to make the right adjustments as the Filipinos pressed on defense.

Ryan Roose Garcia, Cliff Hodge and Nico Salva finished in double figures, striking hardest on transition plays keyed by their defensive stops.

Seven-foot center Greg Slaughter imposed his presence on the halfcourt set and led the team with 16 points that went with four rebounds and one block.

“It was a good first half for us as we’re tested. We had a difficult time defending their shooters. We forced errors turned to points as we increased the pressure in the second half,” said Black.

The downside for the Nationals was Garvo Lanete suffering a shoulder injury.

“We have a doctor looking at him. We’re ready for any eventuality,” said Black.

If Lanete’s not ready Sunday, Black said Christopher Ellis is capable of playing more minutes.
