PUP lords it over in SCUAA meet

-
Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) scooped almost half of the trophies staked in the 15th State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association last week to emerge overall champion of the six-school National Capital Region meet.

PUP swept the men’s and women’s crowns in athletics and swimming and ruled women’s arnis and basketball and men’s volleyball and along with six second-place finishes came out tops with 277 points.

Rizal Technological University (RTU) bagged second spot but still shared the limelight with PUP, whom it beat for the centerpiece men’s basketball trophy, 84-56. RTU also topped men’s volleyball, women’s badminton and men’s chess.

Rounding out the final overall standings were host Eulogio "Amang" Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology, which ruled men’s table tennis and sepak takraw, third with 129 points; Technological University of the Philippines, the women’s chess champion, fourth with 105 points; women’s table tennis titlist Philippine Normal University fifth with 72 points and Philippine State School of Aeronautics, which conquered men’s badminton, sixth with 28 points.

A highlight of this year’s staging of the SCUAA was the cheer-dance competition on opening day which host Earist ruled. PNU emerged second and PUP third.

Organizing committee chairman and Earist president Dr. Maura Bautista lauded the successful staging of the games as he passed on the right to the hosting of the games to next year’s host, PUP.

Eight sports were played in the SCUAA, the only tertiary level multi-sport competition participated in by government-run learning institutions.<
