Tojino cops Class A title in Southwoods tourney

-
Larry Tojino fired a net 69 to romp away the Class A division trophy from a record field 281 members at the August monthly tournament of the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club.

Tojino, who earned a 14-inch color TV to go with his trophy, beat Buddy Velayo (71) and Andrew Pineda (72) in the newly-renovated Legends course.

The Legends course was closed last January to accommodate major changes and innovations. It now sports the new Tifeagle greens for maximum playability and enjoyment of the members.

"Since its opening, the Legends course has been getting favorable reviews and comments coming the general membership of the club. This interest must have enticed them to join the tournament," Manila Southwoods chairman Robert Sobrepeña noted after a record field 281 members joined the event.

Benjie Abela closed with a net 69 to rule Class B honors. Jun Fernandez and II Soo Bae finished with identical 70s but the former placed second via a lower handicap. Other winners in their respective divisions were K Tan (Class C). Tag Marasigan (Class D) and Lota Nemec (Ladies).

Cecilio Hidalgo was also a big winner after winning the grand raffle prize of a Sony VCD Component System. No one won the Hole-in-one prizes which included an automatic Mitsubishi GSR courtesy of Mitsubishi Motors and an Alaska Cruise from Princess Cruises.

"The overwhelming response by the members forced our Sports and Games Committee to shift the awarding ceremony venue to the veranda ala ‘Southwoods Invitational’ in order to house the big crowd," echoed golf director Jeric Hechanova.
