Science, Math get interesting for millennials

Rex Arcadio San Diego II - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Science Education Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (SEI-DOST) has spearheaded the development of a software or application that enables learners to harness technology while engaging in activities that will help them better understand and even enjoy their science and mathematics subjects.

Josephine Feliciano, science research specialist II of SEI and current technical person in charge of the project, said the DOST Courseware is one of the educational technologies featured in the 21st Century Learning Environment Model, also an innovation of SEI-DOST.

She said the Courseware was digitized in partnership with Advanced Science and Technology Institute, and reviewed by experts from the Philippine

Normal University, UP National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education and Department of Education (DepEd).

All original and Filipino-developed, the courseware is an interactive multimedia teaching and learning resource of lessons in science and mathematics from Grades 1-8 to support DepEd’s basic education and K-12 curriculum.

It aims to optimize the teaching and learning of science and math through the use of technology and assist in upgrading the quality of learning.

Feliciano believes providing students and teachers easier access to teaching and learning resources and mainstream technology will greatly assist students in learning faster and better.?The DOST Courseware, which amplifies and standardizes innovative education technology, is cost-effective since these modules can be availed of for free. When it was introduced 12 years ago, the first volume was in MS Windows format stored in CDs, which could only be installed in PCs.?

To make the education technology more available to a greater and wider audience, today’s Courseware modules can be downloaded in different platforms: MS Windows from the SEI website, Android from the Google Play, and IOS from Apple Store. ??

An upcoming package in 2020 is the Strategic Intervention Material for Teaching with Augmented Reality or SIMATAR, which would engage in interactive use of simulation and animation in five modules for Science Grade 8.

All modules can be downloaded from the SEI website www.sei.dost.gov.ph?
