MANILA, Philippines — Up to six tropical cyclones may hit the country before the end of this year, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

PAGASA weather specialist Rusy Abastillas said two or three cyclones might enter the country in October, one or two in November and at least one in December.

Abastillas said cyclones usually affect Central Luzon, the Visayas and Northern Mindanao in the last quarter of the year.

At least 14 cyclones have entered the country this year, most of which were classified as tropical depression, the lowest in the categories used by PAGASA.

Meanwhile, a shallow low-pressure area was spotted 955 kilometers east-northeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar at around 5 a.m. yesterday.

PAGASA weather forecaster Gener Quitlong said the weather system has no direct effect on any part of the country.

Quitlong said the low-pressure area has a slim chance of developing into a tropical cyclone.

He said fair weather would prevail across the country until Sunday despite isolated rains due to thunderstorms.

Quitlong said the country is experiencing a transition of the wind system from warm and moist southwest monsoon to cold northeast monsoon.

He said the “first surge” of the northeast monsoon is affecting parts of Northern Luzon.

Quitlong said the northeast monsoon or cold and dry air from China and Siberia would be felt starting on the third week of next month or first week of November.
