Aussie gets rock star treatment
DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Of the five world champions who are here to compete Sunday, one stood out during yesterday’s final press conference at the Azuela Cove.
Craig Alexander of Australia, the three-time Ironman world champion and two-time Ironman 70.3 world champion, was treated like a rock star.
“It’s nice that triathletes in the Philippines recognize what I’ve done,” said the 44-year-old, who had graced the cover of many international triathlon magazines.
A Filipino couple lined up to have a moment with Alexander, carrying with them magazines for the world champion to sign.
Another couple had the 5-foot-11 triathlete carry their infant before their picture together was taken.
“That’s why it’s always nice to be back here,” said Alexander heading to Sunday’s race that covers a 1.9 km swim leg, a 90 km bike leg and a 21 km run, totalling 70.3 in distance when converted to miles.
