Waste disposal made easy – and fun
MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through the National Solid Waste Commission Secretariat has been working with local government units for a cleaner environment.
“However, this is not enough, so we have to encourage further participation of other stakeholders, particularly nongovernmental organizations, the private sector, households, and schools,” Environment Secretary Ramon Paje said.
The growing concerns on waste disposal were highlighted during the recent rainy season, with increased flash floods and proliferation of diseases evidenced throughout the country.
“To further facilitate and popularize compliance with RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, we came up with the book, ‘3Rs of Fun in Waste’ that shows us how (to manage waste) through a simplified version of RA 9003. Solid waste management is shown in the book to be easy, accessible by all, and fun for everyone,” Paje said.
The book is colorfully illustrated, providing not only clear illustrations but actual waste products turned into useful items for the home and as gifts for family and friends.
Items usually thrown away such as old books are turned into safety boxes, and various plastics and cans are turned into container gardens. The same project also shows how biodegradable waste can be used in the garden.
3Rs of Fun in Waste offers not only the reasons why individuals and household members must all do their share in reducing, reusing and recycling waste. More importantly, the book shows how everybody can do it – from children to working adults and even retirees.
Styrofoam and scrap fabrics as well as wood and broken tiles all have their interesting uses. Through step-by-step guides and illustrations in 3Rs of Fun in Waste, everybody can now pitch for the preservation of the environment.
“3Rs of Fun in Waste motivates readers to adopt waste management habits that they can materially profit from, in addition to protecting our environment. From easy-to-follow proper method of waste segregation, to creating up to a hundred marketable products from recycled materials, this commendable book brings waste management within everyone’s reach,” Paje added.
3Rs of Fun in Waste is now available at Gypsyrock.etsy.com and Amazon.com.
