Mallengke: the public market of the future
MANILA, Philippines - SM Marketmall opened in October 2011 on the site of the torn-down palengke. It is the first public-private partnership between SM Prime Holdings and an LGU. It is also the first mall with Hypermarket, wet and dry market and bagsakan.
On its top floor, SM Marketmall offers a spacious unloading area, also known as a bagsakan, for wholesalers of fruits and vegetables from other provinces. A multi-level parking area addressed the problem of traffic caused by viajeros who used to unload products on the main road.
For the first time, efficient use of water was made possible using a sewage treatment plant and proper solid waste segregation. Clean restrooms are also a novelty enjoyed by both tenants and customers. SM Prime Holdings’ regional operations manager Eric Tan said they hope the mallengke concept makes its way to other municipalities and cities in the Philippines.
