The Old 7th Congressional District of Cebu

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

When the Americans occupied our country, the first step they did was to establish our legislature through the Philippine Assembly. Cebu was divided then into seven congressional districts; this was from 1907 and ended in 1972 when President Marcos abolished congress. The seventh congressional district of Cebu was composed of the municipalities of Asturias, Balamban, Bantayan, Daanbantayan, Medellin, San Remigio, Tuburan and Sta. Fe. The following served as its representative:

1907-1909       -           Pedro Rodriguez (a street                                           in Cebu City is named                                                after him)

1909-1912       -           Eulalio E. Causing

1912-1919       -           Tomas Alonzo

1919-1925       -           Jose Alonzo (Tomas and                                             Jose are sons of Don                                       Eugenio Alonzo,  the                                      founder of the                                                             Municipality of Asturias)

1925-1934       -           Paulino Ybañez

1934-1938       -           Buenaventura Rodriguez                                            (the street fronting the                                                Vicente Sotto                                                  Memorial Medical Center                                           is named after him, he                                        also became Governor of                                            Cebu)

1938-1941       -           Roque V. Desquitado

1941-1949       -           Jose Rodriguez

1949-1957       -           Nicolas G. Escario (Jose                                                                     Rodriguez and Nicolas                                                 Escario both became                                       mayors of Cebu City, both                                         also have streets named                                              after them in Cebu City)

1957-1961       -           Antonio de Pio

1961-1969       -           Tereso Dumon

1969-1972       -           Celestino N. Sybico, Jr.
