MANILA, Philippines — Manila Mayor Isko Moreno yesterday called on national leaders to settle their political differences and unite.

“The common ground is the Filipino people. I hope they understand that their obligation to the nation is more important than their obligation to their parties,” Moreno said.

Political dysfunction at the national level could affect Manila, one of the country’s most densely populated cities, he said.

Meanwhile, Moreno placed Manila under high alert status following yesterday’s magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao.

Despite its distance from Metro Manila, Moreno said this is a regular city preparation when a strong temblor strikes anywhere in the country.

Local offices are mandated to inspect buildings, schools and other critical infrastructure across the city.
