MANILA, Philippines — Police have apprehended up to 24,881 violators of local ordinances in Metro Manila under the “Safer Cities” initiative.

Since Monday, police arrested 8,075 people drinking and smoking in public places, 2,672 shirtless men roaming the streets, 2,245 minors loitering during curfew hours and 584 people in late-night karaoke sessions.

Other ordinance violations were committed by 11,305 people.

Violators must pay fines totaling P5.6 million to their respective local government units (LGUs), National Capital Region Police Office spokesperson Maj. Hazel Asilo said yesterday.

In southern Metro Manila, the top three cities with the most number of violators were Muntinlupa with 6,086, followed by Taguig with 1,372 and Makati with 1,230.

“The Safer Cities strategy is anchored on existing ordinances of LGUs. We’re intensifying the implementation of community ordinances,” Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuano told a news briefing at Camp Crame.

The Southern Police District arrested over 12,211 violators, followed by the Quezon City Police District with 4,165, Northern Police District with 3,316, Eastern Police District with 2,775 and Manila Police District with 2,414.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla earlier ordered the strict enforcement of ordinances to deter crime in Metro Manila and other major urban areas.

Violators did not resist authorities, Asilo said, as they were aware of the offenses they committed.

Barangay officials are joining police officers in operations, Asilo said.

“We’re obligating village officials to join us. Before, it’s mostly the police who are patrolling to enforce local ordinances,” Asilo said.

Criticisms are welcome to further improve the implementation of the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s Safer Cities program, the PNP said. –  Andrew Ronquillo
