MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education has promoted 16,000 teachers, with another 41,000 lined up for promotion under the expanded career progression for teachers program, DepEd announced yesterday.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said many of the 900,000 public school teachers experienced delays in their promotions due to rigid structures and persistent backlogs.

However, with the enactment of Republic Act 12288 or the Career Progression System for Public School Teachers and School Leaders Act, the DepEd would be able to clear promotion backlogs, recognize years of actual classroom service and ensure timely career advancement for teachers in active service, Angara said.

“New teachers entering the system will no longer expect to wait decades for their first promotion, nor see their growing responsibilities outpace their career rank. Advancement is meant to happen in real time, not as a delayed reward at the tail end of service,” the DepEd said in a statement.
