MANILA, Philippines — State volcanologists yesterday detected continuous earthquakes around Taal Volcano in Batangas, which may lead to an eruption.

Based on the 24-hour monitoring report of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), four volcanic tremors including one that lasted more than 13 hours were detected on Taal Volcano Island and near the main crater lake.

The 24-hour monitoring was conducted from 12 a.m. on Friday to 12 a.m. yesterday.

Other observations included plume emissions that rose 460 meters, sulfur dioxide flux of 466 tons per day and continued short-term inflation of the Taal Volcano Island.

Phivolcs said that although volcanic tremors could persist for several hours or even weeks, they usually indicate a possible eruption.

The agency said these tremors are often not felt by residents living nearby.
