Abu Sayyaf leader killed in Sulu shootout

COTABATO CITY, Philippines — A former Abu Sayyaf leader, wanted for the fatal ambush of a provincial police director 16 years ago, was killed in a shootout with police and Army teams in Maimbung, Sulu on Saturday.

Authorities said Alganer Dahim, alias Wangbu, was listed as the second most wanted person in Sulu.

Dahim, wanted for 33 major criminal cases, hurled a grenade and opened fire at the police and Army teams out to serve a warrant for his arrest in Barangay Kapok Punggol.

At least four soldiers were wounded in the grenade explosion.

Army commander Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete and Brig. Gen. Jaysen De Guzman, Bangsamoro region police chief, separately confirmed that Dahim died instantly after team members fired back.
