MRT-3 enables cashless payment for single-journey tickets

MANILA, Philippines — Cashless payment is now available at the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3).

Commuters riding the MRT-3 trains using single-journey tickets can pay fares by scanning QR codes provided by GCash in all its 13 stations, according to the management of the EDSA rail line.

The QR codes for payment are available at teller booths.

At present, single journey tickets at the MRT-3 are worth between P13 and P28, depending on the destination.

Currently on its pilot test, the cashless payment option was in compliance by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to a directive by President Marcos to make passenger travel “more convenient and faster.”

It was also a result of the inspection performed by DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon and Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Henry Aguda, who also explored the viability of removing the X-ray machine at station entrances.
