Tax discounts sought for special kids’ parents, guardians
MANILA, Philippines — A lawmaker from Bukidnon is seeking tax discounts for parents and guardians of children with special needs.
Rep. Laarni Lavin Roque of the 4th district of Bukidnon filed House Bill 3729, which also seeks to uplift the welfare of differently abled persons.
“We often overlook the fact that equal recognition must also be given to parents of these differently abled persons, who put in extra effort in raising their children,” the bill’s explanatory note read.
Data from the Department of Education’s special education division showed that 13 percent of the country’s children and youth population, or around 7.15 million, have special needs.
Of the figure, two percent are gifted and 10 percent have disabilities.
The measure said that children and youth with special needs have limited access to basic social services.
Roque’s proposal seeks to provide discounts in the children’s tuition, therapy and diagnostic evaluation charges by a medical professional, tutorial services and transportation, among others.
