EU wants peace talks resumed

MANILA, Philippines - The European Union (EU) is looking forward to the continuation of the peace talks between the government and the National Democratic Front (NDF).

EU Ambassador Franz Jessen said the EU would continue to support and monitor developments of the peace talks.

Meeting yesterday with presidential peace adviser Jesus Dureza, Jessen said the EU wants to sustain the momentum for the peace process.

Jessen also urged the government to ensure that the new Bangsamoro Transition Commission (BTC) will implement the peace and development roadmap.

He welcomed the nomination of the members of the new BTC, which will be launched this week in Davao City.

The new BTC is expected to hasten the peace process with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and Moro National Liberation Front.

Dureza welcomed the positive position of the EU on the peace efforts between the government and NDF.

For over 25 years, the EU has been a key player in promoting efforts meant to bring lasting peace in Mindanao.

“EU’s DNA is peace and we like to reiterate our reaffirmation of the EU’s commitment to support peace and development in Mindanao,” Jessen told ambassadors from EU member-states.

Dureza assured Jessen that the government would pursue its engagement with the EU and its member-states.

Jessen invited Dureza to visit the EU’s headquarters in Brussels and other European capitals. – Pia Lee-Brago, Jose Rodel Clapano
