Malapitan returns as Caloocan mayor, beats INC-backed bet
MANILA, Philippines — Incumbent Caloocan City Mayor Oscar Malapitan was reelected as the city's mayor beating Iglesia ni Cristo-backed Caloocan Rep. Enrico "Recom" Echiverri.
Malapitan garnered 62.3 percent of votes or 301,867 votes in 963 clustered precincts while former Mayor Echiverri obtained 172,278 points.
The incumbent mayor proclaimed Tuesday, also defeated independent candidate and former Mayor Macario "Boy" Asistio Jr. who placed third with 8,657 votes. He also won over three other candidates—Zenia Cabaluna, Ricardo Carpio and Rufino Bayon-On.
Malapitan's running mate, Maca Asistio, also won the vice mayoral seat with 333,971 votes.
Caloocan City Rep. Edgardo Erice, who is also Liberal Party spokesperson, was returns to the Lower House with 101,051 votes while Malapitan's son, Dale "Along" Malapitan, was proclaimed the First District representative with 215, 639 votes. — Rosette Adel
