LTFRB links up with govt agencies vs colorum buses

Dennis Carcamo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board will link up with various government agencies to eradicate colorum buses and other express utility vehicles, an official said on Tuesday.

LTFRB chairman Winston Ginez said the Board is now cooperating with various government agencies to launch a grand plan to crackdown on these colorum buses and other public utility vehicles.

"We recognize the acute traffic congestion problem in the metropolis which resulted in our city mayors implementing ordinance to address the issue," Ginez said.

He said the proliferation of colorum vehicles is one of the contributory factors to the traffic congestion.

"Makikipagtulungan po kami sa mga iba’t ibang ahensya ng ating pamahalaan...para ikasa ang isang malaking plano na pipigil sa pagdami ng mga colorum bus sa ating lansagan,"he said.

Among the government agencies include the Department of Transportation and Communications, Department of Interior and Local Government, Land Transportation Office, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and the Philippine National Police.

Ginez added the grand plan is also in line with his marching order from DOTC secretary Joseph Emilio Aguinaldo Abaya to curb colorum buses.

Last week, an ordinance was implemented by the City of Manila banning buses from entering and plying the roads of Manila if they do not have terminal within the city.

"We want to work with them (city mayors) and other government agencies in our fight against colorum buses, however we want them to also consider the legality of bus franchises," Ginez said.

Ginez also clarified that the Board is no longer issuing any bus franchises since there are more than enough PUBs plying the metropolis.

"LTFRB carefully reviews all application for PUB franchises; we do not grant permits if we recognize that the number of buses in one route is enough to serve the needs of commuters in that specific area," he added.

To date, Ginez reiterated that the Board has not issued any bus franchises.
