Fire razes Parañaque slum

MANILA, Philippines - A three-hour fire destroyed 100 shanties at a slum area in Sucat, Parañaque City yesterday.

The fire broke out shortly before noon at the Silverio Compound and was put under control three hours later, city fire marshal Chief Inspector Renato Gapus said.

The firefighters had to go through narrow alleys and refill their fire trucks in other areas since there were no fire hydrants in the shantytown, Gapus said.

No injuries or deaths were reported during the fire, which has displaced at least 300 families.
