Bucayu takes oath, vows reforms

Edu Punay - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Newly appointed Bureau of Corrections director Franklin Jesus Bucayu vowed to implement reforms at the national penitentiary to make it ”more responsive to the needs of modern times.”

“It will be a tough job. But with the help of stakeholders, I think we can attain our mission,” Bucayu told reporters after taking his oath before Justice Secretary Leila de Lima  yesterday morning.

Bucayu said his main objective is to secure the inmates and institute reforms to attain  restorative justice.

“I simply believe that a good administration will produce good results,”  he added.

Bucayu will assume office next week.

Meanwhile, De Lima advised Bucayu to brace for possible attempts from syndicates in the prisons to sabotage his leadership.

“Learn the ropes, know the culture and know the organization so he can address the problems. I forewarned him that there are elements that will test and sabotage his programs, so his firmness will be needed,” the DOJ chief said.

Bucayu was a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1981. He also served as police director in the Ilocos region.
