Belmonte rallies QC vs global warming

-
Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. called on residents to join the campaign against global warning by adopting proper garbage disposal procedures in their respective communities.

Speaking to city hall employees during yesterday’s flag-raising ceremony, Belmonte said environment protection is one of his administration’s top priorities.

Garbage and fuel emissions, he said, must be curbed to avoid depleting the earth’s ozone layer, the primary cause of global warming.

He emphasized that the United Nations has raised concern about global warming.

Belmonte encouraged residents to participate in the city government’s campaign to promote recycling in a bid to cut down the city’s trash output. “Proper garbage disposal is the concern of everyone.”

The program is spearheaded by the local government’s Environment Protection and Waste Management Division (EPWD).

The city government has launched a contest to come up with names for three mascots adopted to remind everyone of the urgency of environment protection.

In line with efforts to protect the environment, the city government is the first in the country to build a power plant using methane gas generated by decomposing garbage.

Quezon City also holds an annual cleanup of creeks, rivers and waterways, which officials say, have greatly reduced flooding during typhoons. – Perseus Echeminada
