Leaders of the militant Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) nationwide, together with hundreds of farmers, rural folk and their advocates, gathered yesterday at the historic Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Manila and endorsed party list group Bayan Muna.
The peasant group also called on the peasantry and the people to junk senatorial candidates they called "MGA PEStE" (Pests).
KMP chair Rafael Mariano said "the peasantry will only vote for candidates who will struggle for the achievement of the peasant agenda as part of their general program of action. For peasantry, only Bayan Muna has it."
Bayan Muna will definitely push the peasant legislative agenda in the halls of Congress. Bayan Muna has fought for the implementation of genuine land reform or the free distribution of land, a stop in massive land-grabbing and forced eviction of farmers, termination of liberalization in the agricultural sector and against militarization in the countryside. And this is proven by decades of struggle in the parliament of the streets," Mariano said.
KMP secretary general Danilo Ramos said the peasantry will not vote for anti-peasant, anti-people, fascist and militarist senatoriables they dubbed as "MGA PEStE - Peste sa Magsasaka." The KMP said "MGA PEStE" stands for : Mercado, Gringo, Angara; Ping, Estrada, Santiago and Enrile. – Sandy Araneta
