MANILA, Philippines — Detained former President Rodrigo Duterte has asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) Appeals Chamber to waive his appearance at the hearing on the judgment of his challenge to the court’s jurisdiction.

The request to waive his appearance for the April 22 hearing was filed by his counsel, Nicholas Kaufman, before the Appeals Chamber on April 13.

“In his absence, and with his full permission, Mr Duterte will be represented by Counsel,” Duterte’s camp request read.

The Appeals Chamber has set the delivery of the judgment on the jurisdiction challenge for April 22 at 11 a.m.

During the confirmation of charges hearing for Duterte from February 23 to 27, he also waived his appearance, which was allowed by the tribunal.

On Oct. 23, 2025, the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber 1 rejected Duterte’s challenge to the jurisdiction of the ICC in relation to alleged crimes against humanity of murder against the detained former president over his war on illegal drugs.

In November 2025, Duterte asked the Appeals Chamber to “reverse its impugned decision,” arguing that the chamber made errors in its previous ruling on the court’s jurisdiction.
