LGUs urged to help combat monkeypox

MANILA, Philippines — Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos has urged local government units (LGUs) to take proactive measures to help prevent the spread of monkeypox, following the first confirmed case in the country.

Abalos said that LGUs should be in close coordination with the Department of Health (DOH) to carry out measures in stemming the transmission of the new virus that has spread around the globe.

“The adage prevention is better than cure still applies today. As the primary frontliners in your areas, it behooves upon our LGUs to initiate precautionary measures and spread awareness to your constituents about monkeypox and what they need to do about it,” he said in a statement released yesterday by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

The DOH is strictly monitoring inbound and outbound travelers for monkeypox cases, but LGUs should still be prepared for any eventualities and exercise the same vigilance in addressing COVID-19, said Abalos.

He said local health offices, Epidemiologic and Surveillance Units, and Barangay Health Emergency Response Teams should be ready to implement DOH guidelines and protocols on the surveillance, screening, management and infection control of this new virus.

The DILG chief also enjoined the public to strictly adhere to minimum public health standards and minimize contact with sick persons.

For taking early measures in handling possible cases on the LGU level, Abalos lauded Quezon City for organizing its Quick Response Team for monkeypox contact tracing and awareness campaign; and San Juan City for its health protocols, designated isolation facilities and information campaign.
