Department of Education, Facebook eye ‘digital’ partnership
MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) is looking at a possible partnership with social media company Facebook for the implementation of various digital programs.
Education Secretary Leonor Briones on Thursday met with officials of the regional and country offices of Facebook to discuss the project.
Briones also tested Facebook’s Oculus Virtual Reality headset, which may be used in immersive education through various applications.
DepEd Undersecretary and spokesperson Annalyn Sevilla said the discussions included the adoption of Workplace by Facebook, a work collaboration tool developed by the company.
Officials also tackled the possible conduct of seminars on cyber ethics, right conduct on social networks and digital education.
“Everything is still being discussed. No firm commitments or agreements yet,” Sevilla said.
Briones previously pushed for the adoption of new technology in the Philippine education system, supporting projects such as the computerization of public schools.
